Frederick Erskine Rush 4890
Frederick Erskine Rush enlisted in November 1915 and like his brother Arthur, spent the first few months of overseas service in Egypt. He was posted to the 56th Battalion in France in June 1916, and promoted Lance Corporal three weeks later. His war was a short one. Frederick died of wounds on 2nd August 1916 and is buried in Estaires Communal Cemetery near Armentieres, France.
Perhaps in reaction to his brother’s death, John Herbert ‘Jack’ Rush enlisted less than two weeks later, on 14th August 1916. The last of the Rush boys to join up was 37 year old Philip Charles. He had served with the 3rd NSW Imperial Bushmen in the Boer War in South Africa. Married with three children, and another on the way, Philip sailed from Sydney in May 1917. He served in France from November 1917 until he was injured in an accident in September 1918 and evacuated to England.
